Le d\u00e9veloppement des charbonnages borains et l\u2019essor industriel (verreries, fa\u00efenceries, produits r\u00e9fractaires, constructions m\u00e9caniques etc \u2026) engendr\u00e8rent l\u2019extension du r\u00e9seau ferroviaire autour de Saint-Ghislain. De nouvelles lignes sont construites :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>en 1861, Saint-Ghislain \u2013 Bas\u00e8cles, prolong\u00e9e ensuite vers Leuze et Tournai<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>en 1867, Saint-Ghislain \u2013 Frameries via Hornu et Quaregnon-Monsville<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>en 1874, Saint-Ghislain \u2013 Mons via Warquignies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>en 1876, Saint-Ghislain \u2013 Jurbise via Baudour<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>en 1879, Saint-Ghislain \u2013 Ath via Sirault et Chi\u00e8vres<br>Il faut ajouter que depuis le 10 juillet 1840, une ligne industrielle destin\u00e9e au transport du charbon, reliait la gare charbonni\u00e8re de Warquignies au port de Saint-Ghislain situ\u00e9 le long du canal de Mons \u00e0 Cond\u00e9.<br>Rapidement la gare de Saint-Ghislain sera \u00e9quip\u00e9e d\u2019un faisceau de triage pour les trains de marchandises, de deux remises pour les locomotives et d\u2019un atelier pour la r\u00e9paration des wagons.<br>Saint-Ghislain \u00e9tait ainsi dot\u00e9 d\u2019un outil performant largement utilis\u00e9 par l\u2019occupant allemand durant la 2\u00e8me guerre mondiale. Alors que se pr\u00e9parait le d\u00e9barquement de Normandie, l\u2019aviation alli\u00e9e bombarde Saint-Ghislain durant la nuit du 1er au 2 mai 1944. Les installations ferroviaires sont d\u00e9truites \u00e0 plus de 90%. Seul le b\u00e2timent voyageur fut peu touch\u00e9 et est encore en place aujourd\u2019hui.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped \u00eatre un b\u00e2timent technique \u00ab\u00a0\u00e0 usages divers\u00a0\u00bb (BUD), compte tenu de sa taille (2 fen\u00eatres, par d&rsquo;acc\u00e8s c\u00f4t\u00e9 quai).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>L\u2019apr\u00e8s-guerre. <\/strong>D\u00e8s la paix revenue, la reconstruction de la gare d\u00e9bute aussit\u00f4t car il est indispensable de relancer au plus vite l\u2019\u00e9conomie de la r\u00e9gion.<br>Apr\u00e8s 1960, la gare de formation comptait 48 voies. Le triage des wagons s\u2019effectuait vers 4 pinces \u00e9quip\u00e9es de freins de voies pneumatiques. Saint-Ghislain \u00e9tait alors la gare de triage la plus moderne du r\u00e9seau. Avec la fin de la traction vapeur en 1966 un atelier de traction diesel (ATD) est implant\u00e9 \u00e0 la limite d\u2019Hornu et de Wasmu\u00ebl, pour abriter les premi\u00e8res locomotives diesel affect\u00e9es \u00e0 Saint-Ghislain. A son apog\u00e9e, dans les ann\u00e9es 1970-1980, plus de 2000 wagons \u00e9taient trait\u00e9s par jour, 6 jours sur 7. Il n\u2019y avait pas de triage le dimanche.<br>Au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 2000 le d\u00e9clin va d\u00e9buter. Saint- Ghislain va perdre son statut de gare de formation tandis que les activit\u00e9s de l\u2019ATD seront transf\u00e9r\u00e9es \u00e0 Monceau. L\u2019atelier des wagons avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e9t\u00e9 ferm\u00e9 au d\u00e9but de l\u2019ann\u00e9e 1996.<br>Actuellement Saint-Ghislain conna\u00eet toujours un trafic voyageurs important, 4000 navetteurs et \u00e9tudiants fr\u00e9quentent la gare les jours de semaine. Pour les marchandises, seul subsiste la desserte de la zone industrielle de Tertre .<br>R\u00e9clam\u00e9e par les industriels des deux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de la fronti\u00e8re, la r\u00e9ouverture du point fronti\u00e8re Qui\u00e9vrain \u2013 Blanc-Misseron pourrait rendre \u00e0 la gare une partie de ses activit\u00e9s. De m\u00eame la ligne industrielle n\u00b0 242 a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9nov\u00e9e afin de desservir le port autonome situ\u00e9 \u00e0 la darse de Ghlin sur le canal Nimy \u2013 Blaton.<br>L\u2019ancien atelier des wagons est lou\u00e9 depuis 1998 par le PFT afin d\u2019abriter le mat\u00e9riel historique pr\u00e9serv\u00e9 par l\u2019association. Si momentan\u00e9ment il n\u2019est ouvert au public que le premier samedi du mois, il deviendra \u00e0 terme le Mus\u00e9e R\u00e9trotrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Le premier b\u00e2timent de la gare<\/strong>. Les \u00e9vocations historiques du premier b\u00e2timent principal de la gare de Saint-Ghislain sont rares. Une gravure des lieux, publi\u00e9e dans le livre de Roland Holbrecht \u00ab&nbsp;5 g\u00e9n\u00e9rations de rails, de trains, de vies et d\u2019hommes&nbsp;\u00bb (\u00e9ditions PFT), montre la pr\u00e9sence d\u2019un b\u00e2timent modeste \u00e0 \u00e9tage construit en bordure des voies de la ligne du \u00ab&nbsp;Midi&nbsp;\u00bb, venant de Mons vers Qui\u00e9vrain et la France. On notera au passage que cette ligne, actuelle ligne 97, n\u2019a jamais chang\u00e9 de trac\u00e9 \u00e0 hauteur, entre autres, de la gare de Saint-Ghislain (contrairement \u00e0 la gare de Mons, par ex.). La gravure montre donc la pr\u00e9sence d\u2019un petit b\u00e2timent avec \u00e9tage construit en bordure des voies. Tout pr\u00e8s, c\u00f4t\u00e9 ville, on d\u00e9couvre le grand b\u00e2timent des drapiers Thi\u00e9ry, d\u00e9p\u00f4t, judicieusement construit tout pr\u00e8s de chemin de fer, de leur magasin situ\u00e9 dans la Grand-Rue de Saint-Ghislain. Ce b\u00e2timent avait \u00e9t\u00e9 construit en 1840 dans la perspective de l\u2019arriv\u00e9e du chemin de fer \u00e0 Saint-Ghislain le 7 ao\u00fbt 1842. Il fut d\u00e9truit dans les bombardements alli\u00e9s de la ville en mai 1944. La famille Thi\u00e9ry, venue de Lorraine, avait commenc\u00e9 ses activit\u00e9s \u00e0 Saint-Ghislain en 1841. Les descendants ou leurs meilleurs employ\u00e9s seront \u00e0 l\u2019origine des \u00ab&nbsp;Grands Magasins de la Bourse&nbsp;\u00bb et \u00ab&nbsp;Au Bon March\u00e9&nbsp;\u00bb \u00e0 Bruxelles. Le nouveau b\u00e2timent de la gare de Saint-Ghislain verra sa construction approuv\u00e9e par les instances politiques le 8 mars 1889. Sa mise en service suivra en 1890. La gare acquit son statut de \u00ab&nbsp;gare de premi\u00e8re classe&nbsp;\u00bb en 1897. Ce b\u00e2timent monumental de la gare est celui que nous connaissons toujours en 2026.
